Islay. There are more distilleries and sandy beaches on Islay (pronounced “eye-la”) than any other Scottish Island. The area is steeped in history from generations of conquerors and settlers. There are Celt and Viking antiquities and ruins left by the Lord of the Isles and feuding Clans. The Highland Clearances and two World Wars have left their mark. The Islay landscape is rich with standing stones, ruined forts, castles and medieval chapels….

Hot Tip. All the traditional distilleries were once served by boat with their own tiny harbours and piers. Although no longer in use, they are still there and well worth a quick look (& photo) on any distillery visit.
