This picturesque corner of the Surrey Hills lies about 10 miles from both Guildford and Dorking and is officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is formed from the sandstone landscape of the Greensands. The land rises gradually away from the North Downs to reach a high point of almost 300m at Pitch Hill, Holmbury and Leith Hill.
The area is heavily forested, with the complex trail network providing some of the finest hiking, biking and riding paths in southern England. The trails are compact and well drained so usually remain in good condition throughout the year.
Valleys cut deeply through the Greensands and are characterised by steep wooded hillsides with small compact communities. Villages and hamlets cluster along narrow winding roads and their pubs provide excellent refreshment facilities. The village of Peaslake enjoys the focus of a few tiny shops and is a mecca for bikers and hikers at any time of the year. The Peaslake Village Stores serves hot drinks and Pedal and Spoke provide for the MTB enthusiast. The Hurtwood Inn is the perfect spot to relax after a days exertions. Visit Peaslake and the 3 Peaks using this detailed map as your guide.
The Surrey Hills Trails – Mountain biking is permissible on many of the trails in the wooded areas of the Greensands. Do not ride on public footpaths, stay on the bridleways, byways and permissible single track. Please ride responsibly and give way to hikers and horses, especially along the Greensand Way long distance path.
What draws the many mountain bikers to the area is the plethora of both natural and purpose built trails. Part of the mystique of the single track is its somewhat hidden or secret nature. There is always a chance of stumbling across a new or unknown trail.
The main named single tracks are clearly shown on the map in green. The UTM coordinates for the start points of these trails is also given and these figures can be entered into a GPS. Some other less well known trails are marked in magenta and the UTM grid allows GPS coordinates to be calculated.
The named trails are Barry Knows Best or BKB (1.2k), Proper Beau (200m), T5 (1.3k), Yogurt Pots (700m), Telegraph Row (1.5k) and Summer Lightning (1.0k)
